UCLM among the top 200 world’s young universities, according to THE ranking

World’s best universities aged 50 years or under

THE Young University Ranking 2017 edition incorporates for the first time the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) in the list of the best 200 young universities in the world, defined as those aged up to 50 years. At 32, UCLM has been included along with other 15 Spanish universities in this international ranking published by Times Higher Education.

The UCLM is ranked 151-200 in this ranking aimed at evaluating the trajectory of universities aged up to 50 years. As indicated by the editors of this ranking, these types of universities do not have, in many cases, the reputation linked to historical institutions, but they do have advantages in aspects such as internationalization, collaboration with companies or scientific publications thanks to their greater dynamism.

The Spanish university system is made up of 75 universities, 17 of which are more than 50 years old. Of the 58 Spanish universities up to 50 years, this ranking has selected only 15, with an average 36 years seniority comprised between King Juan Carlos University, aged 20 and the Autonomous Universities of Madrid and Barcelona, as well as the University of the Basque Country, aged 49.

The UCLM was formally created in 1982, although it did not start functioning until 1985 with the beginning of the first academic year; consequently, for the purposes of this ranking, it is incorporated with a recognized seniority of 32 years, still being in its 31st academic year in 2016-17. The UCLM is the eighth youngest Spanish university among those ranked within the top 200 world’s universities in this ranking edited by Times Higher Education.

The chancellor, Miguel Ángel Collado, has addressed the university community in an internal communication as soon as the news regarding the inclusion of the UCLM in this ranking has been released indicating that “it comes to recognize the quality of an academic institution being done every day with the effort and the enthusiasm of all members of the university community.”

UCLM was selected in 2015 to join the World THE University ranking, which is now added in the Young University rankings. Just a few months ago, the UCLM was also confirmed in the main US University ranking by US News as in another of the main European rankings edited in the UK by QS, having also been selected to integrate the Shanghai Engineering ranking made in the Asian continent.
