UCLM, UPC and UPV, among the top 100 universities in the world
The Shanghai ranking has included the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) among the best universities in the world in the field of engineering, placing it among the top 400 universities on science and environmental engineering, as well as in the top 100 on science and energy engineering. Only three Spanish universities have achieved the first 100 positions in any of the seven areas analyzed, so that Spain is represented by the Polytechnic University of Valencia, the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and the UCLM in this indicator “Top 100” at the relative positioning by country. The three universities are leading these areas in Spain; therefore the UCLM is the first Spanish university on the energy field.
In this edition of the global ranking by subjects, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University has evaluated the research excellence of universities in the areas of chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, science and energy engineering, science and environmental engineering, materials science and engineering and mechanical engineering.
The ranking is mainly based on bibliometric indicators of scientific publications by universities, such as the number of articles published by each university and indexed in the Scopus database, the number of world top 25% and 1% most cited papers respectively, number of citations, number of international co-authored publications and institution’s publications with academic and corporate or industrial co-authors. Furthermore, two excellence academic staff indicators are also used: most cited researchers in each engineering subject and the total number of an institution’s staff winning a significant award in an engineering subject.
Julian Garde, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research and Scientific Policy, put in perspective the achievement posed by these results indicating that “only 245 universities around the world and three Spanish universities are ranked among the top 100 in any of the seven areas assessed in the field of engineering, which proves the excellence level of the UCLM researchers”.
On the other hand, he has also highlighted the inclusion of the institution in the areas of energy and the environment, which are precisely the issues on which the Campus of International Excellence in Energy and Environment (CYTEMA) at the UCLM is based on, confirming the highest rating this initiative has received from the International Commission of experts designated for this purpose by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports.
