First university in relative terms with a 8.4% increment

A total of 5,348 new students chose the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) to take degree courses, according to the Statistics of University Students 2016-17 elaborated by the Ministry of Education. With an 8.4% increase, the UCLM stands as the first public university that has improved in attracting new students. New enrolments in first-degree courses have increased by 416 from 4,932 in the previous academic year, which represents the second largest increase of all public universities in absolute terms.

The 8.4% increment of new undergraduate students registered at the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) also contrasts with a general trend, as public campuses lost 6,562 new students in the last 2016-17 academic year with a 2.3% reduction. The private universities have also faced a setback, with a 0.2% reduction.

The Statistics of University Students 2016-17 published by the Ministry reveals that the group of private distance learning universities were the only ones in increasing the number of new students attracted with an increase of 1,791 people, which does not makes up for the fall among the other university types, producing a negative balance for the whole Spanish University System of almost 5,000 new income students less.

In recent months, reports highlighting different aspects of the higher education and the educational offer at the UCLM have been published, such as those of the EVERIS Foundation in which the companies placed the UCLM´s graduates as the third best prepared students in several disciplines in Spain; or those of the Ministry of Health regarding the results obtained in the “MIR”, in which the UCLM reached the fifth best position in Medicine; even more, those of the Ministry of Education regarding the university graduates employability, in which the UCLM is ranked among the best national universities in most of the degrees offered.

In terms of higher education, these results are accompanied by progresses in other areas, making it possible that UCLM has been ranked among the best universities in the world by the global rankings developed by institutions such as US News, Times Higher Education (THE), Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) or Shanghai Jiao Tong University (Shanghai). This year, the UCLM has been recognised with its inclusion in the list of the top 200 young universities in the world, being awarded with the Campus of International Excellence distinction, further consolidated permanently with the maximum score.
